Have you noticed how more and more, people are driving with their fog lights on when it's simply not necessary to do so? They're for bad fog for gawds sake - not dusk driving! Four lights facing you increases glare and is dangerous. I reckon they think it makes the car look sexy, but I don't see the logic when no-one knows who's driving the bloody thing! I'm led to believe that it's against the law to use fogs when conditions don't require them. It's just another example of how inconsiderate modern drivers are becoming. So there.

Yep it is against the law. However I think there is simply a high % out there who are not aware that they are only meant to be used in bad visibility ( heavy rain being one) I have seen police pull motorists for driving with their fog lights on. NW, The area where it's all happening.

I find that rear fog lights are more of a problem than fronts.
I assume they think that people will leave a bigger gap. The problem is that the glare of the lights makes it more difficult to judge the gap so you could end up driving closer and when the brake lights come on the difference is not so big so you are more likely to go steaming into the back of them. I was driving down the motorway in perfect visibility when I went past a dot matrix sign saying "fog". The driver of the car in front immediately switched on the fog lights. I don't think it was a BMW
What I can afford and what I want are not usually the same thing

I never use them I can't see the point to be honest, I find them pretty useless in the fog.

I have to agree. Fog lights are a valiant and old fashioned attempt to see better in foggy conditions, when in truth that technology (to see through fog) is for a future generation. I suppose in very bad fog they can help you see the kirb - that's about it. Pretty useless generally. Les reckoned they have a use in heavy rain, I just can't see it myself. They're largely just an abused fashion accessory if you ask me. Mainly by Minis, BMWs and hatches. We all know the sort. 2001 225 Coupe:Bose:CC stage 2 remap (280BHP):Milltek catback:Pipewerx 3" DP & sports cat:Forge DV007P:Eibach Pro springs 25mm lower:Koni FSDs:HR 10/15mm spacers:R32 brakes:Z'mann Formula Z discs:Tarox pads:21mm front ARB:S'Pro bushes:Forge tie bars:Piper Cross panel filter:Forge TIP:Falken FK452s:17" OEM 6 spoke wheels:FK 'no rings' grille:Richbrook tax disc holder & door handle surrounds:de-badged.

I think you forget that lights are not just for seeing .................. They are also for being seen in any greatly reduced visibility. To but it bluntly they help others seen you coming as much as you seeing a head. NW, The area where it's all happening.

Use of fog lights front and rear is illegal unless visibility is less than 100 metres - sorry just my driving instructor side coming out

Totally agree. They are illegal when used innappropriately as per RTA and - the highway code says they should be used in fog when visibility is below 100 metres. In rain they are dangerous. At any other time they dazzle and distract:
Some people turn them on because they think it looks cool (forum rules prevent a character appraisal here) Some people turn them on as they think it makes them more visible (dazzling actually) Some people have forgotten to turn them off (they usually have one bulb blown - or better still both bulbs blown!) They are pretty useless. We rarely ever get fog below 100m visibility but some people turn them on if the weather forcast in the next county said it might be foggy next week. It annoys me when someone in front of me turns their rear fog light on - do they think I am blind? Well I'm blinded now! On the odd occasion that I've been in thick fog the most pathetic sight is the crocodile of cars all blinding each other with their fog lights crawling along bumper to bumper - if only they turned them off then they would be able to see further down the road. Literally the blind leading the blinded Bring back public information films! |

[/quote]When you use fog lights the only other lights your supposed to use are your side lights. God do I have to tell you people everything I think there's a few who need to brush up on the lighting laws and highway code etc
